DIY Bird Nest Block
One of my favorite stores to shop for crafting supplies is the thrift store. There is always something there that I know I can either redo or turn it into something even more amazing than it originally was. Sometimes I’ll be looking through items on the shelves and an idea will just hit. That’s exactly what happened when I saw this wooden block. I knew I had many of the pieces already sitting in my craft room to make what I had envisioned, and the rest I went on the hunt for! I hope you follow along with this DIY Bird Nest Block and decide you want to give this a try too!
Supplies:
Thrifted Wooden Block
Scrapbook Paper
Metal Scroll Pieces
Metal Key Hole
Greenery Ring
Spanish Moss
Furniture Tacks
Antique Wax
Hobby Lobby Ceramic Bird
First, I measured and cut squares from the scrapbook paper to cover all four sides of the block.
Second, I used Mod Podge to glue them to each side of the block. I left just the smallest of space at the edges of the block where the scrapbook paper didn’t quite meet.
Third, I used the Antique Wax around all of the edges, after I lightly sanded it.
Fourth, I glued the metal scroll pieces diagonally across, top and bottom on one side.
Fifth, I glued down the metal key hole in the center of the block, between the two scroll pieces.
Sixth, I used hot glue to secure some Spanish Moss around the top of the block.
Seventh, I used a bit more hot glue and secured the greenery ring atop of the Spanish Moss.
Finally, I hot glued the ceramic bird on top of the Spanish Moss and the greenery ring. I then used furniture tacks on each corner where I hadn’t put the metal scroll pieces.
Here it is all finished, how do you think it came out? I absolutely love this craft, it came out exactly how I envisioned it would. When I can get a project to look perfect without making any last minute adjustments I couldn’t be any happier. I love finding thrift store items that turn out amazing when I finish with them. This DIY Bird Nest Block was one of those craft projects that I used an item from the thrift store in a completely different way than intended, and it looks perfect!
