DIY Picket Fence Flag

When I came across this picket fence thrown away in the side of the road, I snagged it right up! I love finding discarded items that I can turn into something amazing, and that’s just what I did with this DIY Picket Fence Flag! When this time of year comes around, when I can get into more of my patriotic crafts, I can’t wait to get all my ideas out! I hope you love this craft project as much as I did putting it together, and you give one a shot too!

6 Fence Pickets
Stain (Dark Walnut)
Paints: Red, White & Blue
Star Stencil
Wire (hanger)

First, I took apart six of the slats from the fence. I laid five of them out together.

Second, I placed the sixth slat at the back of the other five and measured off two pieces that I cut to size to hold them all together.

Third, I placed the cut pieces on either end of the back of the five slats and screwed them on.

Fourth, I painted the top left corner of the slats with the deep midnight blue paint.

Fifth, I alternated the deep burgundy and the almondine paints on the rest of the unpainted slats.

Sixth, I taped down the star stencil I chose to use to the blue portion of the flag. I then used the almondine paint to stencil the stars to each of the blue slats.

Finally, I covered the entire flag, front and back with a layer of deep walnut stain. I wiped off any excess. I then placed two screws into the top back of the frame and used the wire to create a hanger from those.

Here it is all finished, how do you think it turned out? I absolutely couldn’t be happier with this craft project and the way it turned out! I love taking unwanted items and making them my own, especially when they come out as amazing as this DIY Picket Fence Flag has! What do you think, will you be giving this one a try too?
