DIY Rustic Scrap Wood Flag

I love this time of year! This is when I get into my patriotic crafting and what better way to show that than with a flag? When I was cleaning up my craft room that exploded all over the place, I came across some scrap wood pieces that I had stored away. I figured I could definitely make an amazing flag with them and set about finding the rest of the materials I would need. As it turned out I had just about everything I needed! I may or may not be a craft supply hoarder lol! I hope you love this DIY Rustic Scrap Wood Flag as much as I did putting it together, and decide you’d like to give one a shot too!

Supplies:

Scrap Wood Pieces

2 Shims – Home Depot or Lowes

Tall Wooden Star – Had on hand

Wooden Star – Burlap & Button – Thrifted

Paints- Deep Burgundy, Deep Midnight Blue & Almondine

Dark Walnut Stain

Small Scrap Burlap

Small Scrap Coffee Stained Muslin

Letter Stamps

2 Furniture Tacks

Wood Glue

Rusty Wire – My Shop https://shopcreatingthroughchaos.com/collections/craft-supplies

First, I used wood glue in between each wood slat and then placed the shims on the back with more wood glue. I then screwed the shims down to further secure them together.

Second, I painted the top and bottom wood slat with the deep burgundy paint. I then painted the center slat with the almondine paint, and painted the wooden star with the deep midnight blue paint.

Third, I went around the edges of the burlap star with the dark walnut stain, as well as the wood slats.

Fourth, I used wood glue to attach the blue star on the corner of the slats.

Fifth, I then used more wood glue to secure the burlap, and button star on top of the blue star.

Sixth, I lightly twisted the rusty wire and stapled each end onto the back of the wooden slats.

Seventh, I stamped “USA” onto the coffee stained burlap and used Mod Podge to secure it to the bottom right hand corner.

Finally, I attached the furniture tacks to each corner of the “USA” burlap.

Here it is all finished, how do you think it turned out? I couldn’t be happier with the final result, it turned out exactly how I imagined it would. Patriotic crafts are some of my favorite crafts to make and this one in particular is one of my absolute favorites. Most supplies I had on hand and was able to throw this together in next to no time at all. I’m really hoping you enjoyed this DIY Rustic Scrap Wood Flag as much as I did putting it together, and give it a try too!
