DIY Thrifted Buoy Makeover

I love finding pieces at the thrift store that nobody wanted to keep around anymore! Some of those items are the best to make craft projects with, because you can completely change of the look or the function and make it look amazing again all at once! When I found this miniature buoy at my local thrift store, I just had to get it! I knew I could turn it into something amazing and decided then I was going to be gifting it to my neighbor who is a fisherman! This DIY Thrifted Buoy Makeover was one of my favorite thrift store projects in quite a while!

Supplies:

Thrifted Buoy
Paints – Red, White and Blue
Anchor Stencil
Number Stencil
Star Stencil
Rope
Tape

First, I sanded the entire buoy removing all of the old paint.

Second, I taped around the buoy so I could paint the top and the bottom different colors.

Third, I painted the top section of the buoy with the red paint, and the bottom section with the blue paint.

Fourth, I removed the tape and used new tape to cover the edges of the red and blue paint. I then painted the center section with the white paint.

Fifth, I used the 5 stencil on one side of the buoy and stenciled it with black paint. On the other side of the buoy I used the anchor stencil with the blue paint and stenciled it on.

Sixth, I taped my star stencil around the bottom of the buoy and used the white paint to stencil on the stars.

Seventh, I used two pieces of tape on the red section of the buoy to create a very thin stripe. I then painted it with the white paint.

Eighth, I painted the handle of the buoy with the white paint.

Ninth, I used the red and blue paints too paint a stripe of each color toward the end of the buoy handle.

Finally, I cut two equal lengths of rope and fed them through the top of the buoy. I tied the off at the end creating the buoys handle.

Here it is all finished, front and back. How do you think it came out? I couldn’t be any happier with the end results, it came out better than I imagined it would. The colors along with the stenciling really tie this whole project together. I absolutely can not wait to go over and surprise my neighbor with this gift, I think he’ll really love it, I know I do! I’m hoping you loved this DIY Thrifted Buoy Makeover and are able to recreate something similar for yourselves!
